    According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one million people in the United States live with HIV, and 40,000 new cases of the virus are reported each year.

    This is a pretty startling statistic, especially when you realize that we are speaking of an infection that once was at the forefront of our collective consciousness in this nation and at the center of significant activism efforts.
